The Second Half Quartet combines the people’s favorite singers in a style of quartet music that is rare in its field. In 2015, Gerald Wolfe, Mark Trammell, Pat Barker, Rodney Griffin and Chris Allman took home a variety of awards at Gospel Music’s premier award show, The Singing News Fan Awards. Mark Trammell was voted Favorite Baritone of the Year by fans, becoming the first Gospel singer to win such an award in four separate decades; Pat Barker took home the Favorite New Soloist award; Greater Vision’s song, “For All He’s Done,” was voted Song of the Year and once again, Rodney Griffin was the recipient of the Favorite Songwriter Award.

If classic British Sci-Fi writer Douglas Adams was able to call "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" a 'trilogy in four parts' which later became seven, then I am sure it is OK for The Second-Half Quartet can be given some lee-way for quite obviously having five members! The story goes that Greater Voice and The Mark Trammell Quartet were both performing at the same event. During the extended interval the concert promoter asked if the two groups could close out the show together. It happened and went down a storm, so much so that promoters started requesting the groups to perform together. In light of these performances they have decided to get together and record this debut album. The Second-Half Quartet comprises of Gerald Wolfe, Mark Trammell, Chris Allman, Rodney Griffin and Pat Barker.

The songs recorded here are mainly new versions of old favourites that have been around in the Quartet circuit for many years, although some of the versions here have been slightly adapted from their original lyrics. So the classics kick off with "Let Us Cheer The Weary Traveller" and run through other familiar tracks like "Rivers of Joy", "Standing on Holy Ground" and "Going Home". Of course the song that started it all on that night when they performed together, "Prodigal Son" is also on this collection.

It is rare to get such vocal talent working together despite the prevalence of so many quartets in the Southern Gospel scene, this supergroup is really one of the best. Their voices blend together brilliantly when they are singing together, but there is also the seamless switch to emphasise the various parts of the songs. I was brought up listening to four-part choirs so this feels right to me, but rarely have I found a group that works so well together.. Of course none of these guys are exactly new to the scene and they have worked together at different times in their careers, Mark used to be a member of Greater Voice after all!

This is a prime example of the best of this genre. There is nothing new about the tracks themselves, but if you love your Southern Gospel then this should definitely be in your collection.
